we are about to find out if its an issue if you didnt watch the 2nd or 3rd films in the franchise. I have done a quick minim synopsis recap, but its time to go see Jack Black once again voice Poe & kick some kungfu arse. hehe. happy easter everyone.
Its opening day & im impressed. The 6pm showing in screen 2 (their second biggest for seating) is almost full. Obviously families not 1s like me but still, im still like yes peoples thats good.
Trailers, inside out 2, Garfield, wild robot (the preview looks so good{not just for Pedro as a fox}) & i cant remember what the other kids film was, but there was another one, my bad.
We had a minions short before it started as well about the guy from the first despicable me film being stuck on the moon (thats was what the trailer was for despicable me 4) that was cool.
& then the film started… how the hell was this better than ghostbusters yesterday.
Yea why the hell was i laughing at this more than ghostbusters? That should not be the case, but there is was sitting there having a right old chuckle at this. There were point where it was me mainly laughing clearly the jokes going over the kids heads but as an adult i was full on going for it being like ahhh. This film new it had to balance out the kids & their parents (or just millennials too).
Jack Black as always is iconic. As a millennial its a given to adore him. We grew up with Tenacious D & School of Rock (A MINOR GEEEEEEEEEEEEEE) so him doing what he does best as Poe is always good. & i mean his press for this was incredible. I mean it made me go see it & ive never seen the 2nd or 3rd film, but now im thinking i need to, what have i missed.
It was clever how they dealt with the furious five, who arent really in the film. It was a good way to introduce new characters, but not lose the charm of the original. But the vibe still felt right as well. It has its nods to people as well. Dustin Hoffman must just now turn up for one day of recording & is like his little master as well, like oooh okay then im back doing this again.
I like Akwafina, i do. Shes funny & is good. But she is in every animated film voicing someone slightly dodgy at the moment. I get there was a pandemic & signing up for voice work was easy to do from home but thats 3 in 12 months. Its a bit much. Im waiting to see which kids film shes going to be in next.
I love that Poes dads got a mini side quest. They were brilliant.
There is one voice i was not expecting to be in this & then lost my shit over it.
Viola Davies as the Chameleon was so good. So sinister. There will be little kids in years to come who will hear her voice & shudder because of her tone in being so evil & conniving.
That Bar… yea theres a bar scene & its the most batshit not for a kids film part of the movie but oh my good, i loved it & laughed so much watching those 5minutes & then 2minutes later on. It was crazy, when you all see it you will all understand.
The film makers have been really honest about this & have gone, this is for the money & its 90mins for the kids & you know what i appreciate the honesty. Thank you guys for being honest with us. & you know what the story is alright. It could have been so much lazier, but it really went into what could make this something alright.
Thats is exactly what this film is. Its not the minions or disney, but it knows its not going to be that. IT sits in its lane & it makes kids laugh, the fights are good & the animation & story arent boring for the adults. It might not be the best kids film oh no but it did the job on a thursday afternoon.
Skidoosh.
