I have no hang over from the work christmas party which if im honest is a fucking miracle. Do not ask me how. Me & one of my bosses wife had 2 bottles of red wine each. This does however mean i can get to the 2pm showing of Kraven woohooo. Lets go.
Well i almost gave up on my journey. There were road works & accidents & christmas shopping all over Brighton. It took me almost 90mins to get to the marina. I left early because i wanted to get some bits in asda before my film, that didnt happen. I got straight to the car park, parked, grabbed a coffee at starbucks & went striaght into my screening, where they were just about to start the trailers. Id say screen 8 had about 40 people in there for this. It was mainly men, which surprised me. Where are my ATJ girlies at.
Trailers, the weird monkey film, Captain america, the weird haunted house one, nosferatu & there was one more… but i dont remember what it was i was to busy taking my coat off.
& then the film started… Well if you want to talk average super hero movies, this fits the popcorn & beer on a friday night category.
This is clearly made a little while ago. I mean i think its been on my watchlist for at least the year before this one. So you can see some bits which clearly were banking on sony doing a lot more with this universe & story, but we now know that there isnt going to be anymore after this one. So the typical old school cliff hanger for the film is just like urgh really im not going to get an answer to this. Thats not fair.
AJT as always is a delight. He knows what he needs to do. Hes menacing, hes funny, hes sexy & he kicks arse. Hes a good leading man. I know i have money on Rege, but please put that man in a Tux & give him a martini please.
When it was revealed that Fred was playing his brother when they aged up i went ahhhhhhhh. HE was very good. I mean considering come august i had no idea who he was, hes been fucking phenomenal in all the films ive seen him in. I want to see more of him please, cos the guy owns it. Also can he always play piano please, apparently he did do that.
Russell Crowe?! I had no idea he was in this so that was a shock. Also what was with that accent? It wasnt believable, your Russell Crowe for crying out loud. & hes only ever in russia for like one scene, couldnt he have had his normal voice & said his wife was from russia? Urgh.
There were a lot of stunts & action set pieces that were very cool. You sat there going oooh whos going to get taken out first. But the opening bit in the jail is the highlight of all the fights that go down. Its the best bit of the film, which is a shame but not much of it is in the trailers so its worth seeing.
So who was the villain? Ive been thinking about this. Movement man, meh a pawn. The man with the backpack who it took me a while to realise who he was, crap motives just a bit stupid. Their Dad, maybe but did it just to be a brute. Hench men were disposable. There was no one to really sink your teeth into for being a bad guy. I mean even the lion, what was all that about cos he wasnt bad until he attacked.
The opening flashback to show how he got his powers was bloody long. Also of course shes called Calypso, urgh lazy writing. She was under utilised as well & we needed her to do more. She just disappeared when the plot didnt need her at all so much so that when she came back i was like eh oooh right the not love interest who you one day want to build into a love interest but now will never get the chance too.
I liked the club, it was a little seedy but those kind of clubs always are.
The script did feel a little like writing by numbers, there was a clear formular sony go to for their spiderman spin off worlds & this one it got to one point & went erm no more thanks dont divulge any more when exposition was actually needed.
For a lazy saturday afternoon this was fun. It could have been a lot worse for sure, but it could have been so much better do. When its on netflix or sky cinema, its worth a watch maybe once or twice for something kind of fun.
