Me at a horror movie advanced preview at 8pm on a saturday… what the hell am i doing, well it fit in with me so thats why, & im secretly looking forward to this (dont tell anyone) because Sydney is the vibe right now so im sure she will own this. If not she will look hot so…
Screening was full of millennials about half full which is always good, but before the trailers started the screen went black & one of the staff walked in. It was the same screen id seen anatomy of a fall a few weeks ago so i thought they were going to tell us there was an issue with the projector or something but no.
The guy walked in & thanked us for our cineworld loyalty for giving up our saturday nights, & then said please dont post full reviews about this online until Tuesday as there is actually an embargo because the film was premiering that night at a film festival. They then gave away a lucky prize to someone, i didnt win.
Trailers, were all for horror films, Late night with the devil looks so good & Abigail looks a lot of fun, the first omen… less so & then there was also Monkey man wahay.
& then the film started… yea there is a reason i see horror films at 6pm… this is why…
There are going to be a lot of people unhappy with the very end of the film. There are also going to be a lot of people who are angry & there will also be like good for her maybe. I dont want to spoil it for you, but the last scene is the best scene of the entire film & there were people loudly gasping going oh god at that. IT was so clever & it was more horror based than the rest of the film. IT was full on but damn it had to be & im glad you worked our what she was doing before it happened.
I mean there will also people people unhappy with the fact that this film deals with an immaculate conception either, which is explained but not really as to how it happened & how they did it. Not even in the exposition dump at the start of act 3 didnt really explain it properly & why they went for her. It felt lacking.
The most horrible horror bit of the film, which i didnt enjoy was when she was in confession & she removed her nail from her thumb, ewwwwwwwwwww. I mean spitting up teeth was also not very nice, but the nail & it was so dragged out was not nice viewing at all. Just ewwwwwwww.
I wanted to know more about her back story & why she had to leave her church & how they previously treated her. It all seemed glassed over, very much dealt with the lines of “somehow Palpatine returned” does that make sense. They just want you to accept it. I think someone as clever as she ended up being would have shown us more of her past.
What happened to the girl at the start? why were they after her & why was she never mentioned or talked about by anyone in the convent again.
There were a few torture & pain scenes in this film which did have me going erm nope no thank you, which werent nice, but the body falling & feet burning & tongue werent as shocking as what ends up happening.
Sydney was very good, she held the whole thing together. I get that thats the point if you are a lead, but she was a solo lead so she needed to prove her worth here & she did. I also love that in the 9 months she was at this convent, she didnt learn much italian at all. IT was very funny.
There were some good life lessons & morals in this but nothing weve not seen in other horror films before this one or that we wont see in another one to come.
I did feel uncomfortable watching this, but this wasnt anything too extraordinary, from the trailer you can work out exactly where its going, but it is grim along the way & then that last scene is a show stealer, which lets be honest, if you have an average film, the final image you should remember is the last one of the film, which i know i will remember for a little while.
