& then there was 1… ITs time to be valid. almost a full week before the oscars. ive done good. & i also know nothing about this film except for people love it & its about someone going missing. I know nothing so i cant wait to see this.
My monday 7:50 showing had about 25 people in screen 8 which i was kind of expecting. The couple in front of me when they walked in went ahhh this is our last one, clearly award season hunters too. I did feel like the youngest person in the room though.
Trailers Black Bag (that looks so cool) Last Breath(i cant go to the preview it clashes with stuff) Snow White (finally i havent seen that yet at all) & obviously at the moment Danny Dire (im going to go see this film cos it looks crap but in the way that the film knows it will be).
& then the film started… with the state of the world at the moment we all need to watch films like this.
Its becoming a little concerning how many times i have to sit here & go this film is more important now then it ever could be. Living in unprecedented times all the time will surely soon become the norm & no longer be shocking. ITs scary. I also know the kind of people this film needs to be aimed at will never watch a film like this which is sad.
The couple the row in front of me clearly knew even less than me as they sat there & about 10mins in i heard one of them say “is it all going to be in Portuguese?” Bless them.
I knew nothing about this time in Brazil. I knew it wasnt a good period & wasnt the best time to be alive, but i felt incredibly moved & shocked by what i saw. I have since got home & looked up this period & this family & oh my god. I cried. It was painful to watch, so tragic yet so beautiful.
Fernanda deserved the oscar. I’ve seen them all now. Shes the best lead actress out of all of them. I felt her desperation, her want & need to protect her kids. keep them safe & find out what actually did happen. So incredible. A performance i will be thinking about for a long time.
Maybe its foreign language films that get me even more invested, as yes we can sit there & watch Flo give an epic performance, but someone you dont know speaking in a language you dont understand & you read the subtitles to draw you in even more, theres something much more intense about it. Almost like your not watching a film your watching a documentary & your interrupting their lives. Yes some of these actors like Mads end up in mainstream hollywood, but for some of them its still wonderful & im so glad we get to see these films to see how other people perceive their lives & cinema not just the english speakers (& mainly american glamour hollywood).
The passage of time was well done. All of the scenes in the prison all felt long & drawn out to make you feel comfortable. All the bits on the beach were bright & quick & carefree. This was also well done with the pulling of the curtains, making things seem grey after certain points & hazy at other times. It just had some lush lighting & cinematography points. The film nerd inside me was very happy with this.
Because i didnt know the back story until after i got home, i had no idea what happened to the son to put him in the wheel chair. That was not very well dealt with, we were all just meant to know about his accident & that he was famous as well as him mum dad & family. Espcially as he was show as such an active kid.
Dictators & oppressive regimes are bastards arent they. They dont care about any of us. we all suffer while they get richer watching us struggle to survive. Its not nice. They need to take a good hard look at themselves in the mirror. We all get one chance at this life, dont be a selfish twat.
The Dog?! nooooooo!!!
I love the way it showed london off, that house they were renting would now be worth like £3million. Also how everyones lives were just ordinary before the events too. The parties the records the videos, they were just a normal family & their past & their kindness got them into trouble.
Its a hard watch at times but its well worth going into this as blind as possible. Maybe a little knowledge about this period of Brazils history will help, but i was captivated & in awe of the whole film. This is one of the strongest up for best picture this year.
& that was that all the 10 best pictures actors actresses main &supporting & directors watched for the oscars. It was fun to get it all done & dusted again this year knowing that next year i probably wont be able to because i dont get Avatar.
