I have a physical ticket for this one ekkkkkkkk. I know hehe so cool. This all ive heard about is good things & that its one of the most perfect films of the year, but literally the only place showing this is my local cinema. So this was an 8:30pm showing on a friday night. Perfect, also if its scary, ive got a while to calm down when i get home.
I was in their little studio screen, which i adore & also with the timing for this film it meant i could leave my flat at 8:30 drive for 10mins & walk into the cinema just as the trailers start. The Trailers were beetle juice, blink twice, Trap, Wicked, Sing Sing & a few theatre things theyve got something soon.
As i was up on the balcony & arrived 5mins before the film i didnt see how many people were on the floor but there was about another 15 people up in the balcony with me. Mainly my age.
& then the film started… That was not scary, that was beautiful & so not what i was expecting.
Justice & Bridgette basically did a 2 hander for the majority of it well at least there characters did. Little Owen was really cute too & was so shy & then grew into Justice. It was a hard script & a subject that we need to be more vocal about, being who you really are & rebirth into the person you are meant to be. Both dealt with it so well.
Some of the cinematography & visuals with the light & colour were mesmerising. I was sitting there going oooh wow. Especially when they first properly meet & sit between the vending machines, hers is all black & his is pink & vibrant as hes still naive & learning who he is. & then slowly the colours leave his life & he becomes grey & conforming. It says a lot about how the world wasnt us to be. The little drawing & annotations were brilliant too. So very 90s & early 00s of them.
I love how it talks about the millennial nostalgia for tv & the past too. I know everyone has that with whatever generation it is, but we got so much cool stuff that we are now all revisiting so it fitted in so well. & the Pink Opaque, sums up exactly what we used to watch. Even down to the monster of the week taking from Buffy & so many other tv shows of that era, which needed to connect there overall story but have one main event for that week (looking at you Pedro in buffy for sure as the example).
When it get dark & has the horror elements it goes for it & its dark. Like the gore & the death &the self pain (especially through the monologue) yea it gets dark &The explains the age rating. like its not nice. Its very brief but its so so good.
What a brilliant way to explain coming out to people especially back in the day. It was so interesting that it was so hard even 20 years ago to just be you & be judged. I mean its still not as perfect as it can be today, but its a huge improvement now compared to then.
Who decided to put Fred Durst in the film?! I was like what the actual fuck but it was epic. HE was only in 4 scenes & had about 30 words to say but ahhhh.
The panic of VHS recordings & missing your favourite shows back in the day that panic was so so real. If you missed it you couldnt just log on to the iplayer or netflix to watch it. Weve come a long way in a few years for sure.
When we get to awards season at the end of this year & start of next year, i have a feeling this is the film i will be livid that isnt included especially for cinematography & art. Its such an important nice film, which has the balls & guts to tell you the hard truth & that life isnt always easy. Its phenomenal & well worth a watch peoples. Please go find it peoples if you can.
