Here we go the number 1 pick of 2024. Think this might be the earliest a number 1 pick has come out in the cinema for me, so lets see is it worth the hype & the wait from 3rd November to 1st March.
So the original Dune a few years ago i took my dad to & he said hed come to part 2. So not only was i shocked that he said he was happy to go to cineworld to see it, but he agreed to screen X & on opening night. My jaw almost hit the floor. So proud of him. Thats a massive deal.
Screen X was sold out. Every age was there. It was epic. Well i say sold out. The front row was empty because why pay for screen X if you cant see half of it.
When we were driving home, i asked my dad if he could remember the film trailers. We had 6 in total & it took until we got home to remember the last one.
The were Ghostbusters, Godzilla, Fall Guy, Borderlands, Civil War (that was the one we forgot) & planet of the apes.
We also did have 32 mins of adverts & trailers. Also everyone turned up on time well done peoples.
& then the film started… My dad said hed never heard a cinema be so silent & paying such intense attention to the screen for 2h 46mins & im not sure either of us have picked our jaws up off the floor yet.
My dad did also say that Austin Butler looked like a skinner, younger version of Matt Lucas… i laughed for a while at that. I really did. think thats all with my dads comments now, your here for me not him, unless you arent… in which case im here to convert you.
People say they dont make movie stars anymore & there have been a few occasions where ive sat there going hmmm maybe they have a point…STOP THE SEARCH! ITS CONFIRMED ITS TIMOTHEE!!! Seriously incredible, because lets be honest he was Wonka & made a fortune up until this film came out. HE is the future movie star. Flo, Zendaya & Austin can all join him on this journey too. The world of cinema & acting is safe in their hands people. But it is Timothee’s. I dont think i seen such a driven performance in years. All of it every single second he was on screen he had you attention. He out acted everyone. It was pure joy & a pleasure to watch.
The rest of the supporting cast were incredible. I mean obviously theres Timothee as the lead & then theres others who are more than supporting & then theres supporting & then theres everyone else. Even the everyone else, be it just someone cheering or standing in a crowd or running, it was magnificent from everyone.
The being said… I love Javier Bardem’s performance the most. He was so good at trying to prove his point & prove he wa the messiah & wanting him to succeed, but he was a fighter & really did care about the old & new ways & how to bring it all together & take them to paradise. He should be nominated for best supporting actor next year, its a long way to go, but i hope hes still in the conversation then.
When Zendaya & Ferguson had their little scraps that was so good. The water of life for Ferguson was wonderful to watch. But it was Zendaya face when shit goes down & how her emotions take over to make her, her best self. But it s the last look at the camera at the end of this which leaves you with chills.
Christopher Walken… bless him. He didnt have much to do, but hes looking very very old & was the weakest part of the film. I think that might have been the point with the emperor, but still. It was a little sad to see.
Austin was psycho but damn it was stunning & striking psycho. I loved that planet with the black suns & how it gave the different visual effects to it. Felt very harsh & unforgiving, which lets be honest it should have been. But considering ive not seen Austin in much else other than Elvis, i loved his portrayal here. Properly crazy & those knives ahhhhh. Owned it.
It helps to have a good script. So many action films or big blockbusters dont give you that all the time & rely on their set pieces. But this film… well… perfectly timed exposition, good morals, good conversations, things that were moving or added tension. It was so well written, that im looking forward to owning it on Blu-ray to listen to the entire story & go oh damn. It was incredible.
The sand worm riding on screen X… thats worth the uplift for sure. It went all the way around & it felt like the sad at the side of me was going to hit my head. Well worth a screen X trip if your cinema has one of these.
The voice talking was good, but there was one moment where the whole cinema gasped & it was deserved. I loved it. It was the moment we had waited almost 5 hours for over 2 films & it was like yea fuck that character, its all their fault. Idiot. Hehe yea i liked that alot.
Unless Ridley is hiring Hans to score Gladiator 2, no one is beating the score of this film. Hans has this in the bag for the 2025 oscars. It was insane & just added to the stress & tension of the film. It made the already stakes that were so high even more so. Were going back to the quiet before the storm in Oppenheimer, its just ahhhhhhhhhhhh yea if you werent already going through turmoil watching it the score made sure you felt it all. I do often sit here saying a cinema trip is important for the sound not just the screen.
For a film with lots of death explosions & a gladiator section, there was a lack of blood. It was still extremely violent & the way those action pieces were filmed be it small & intimate or something much larger were full on, but there wasnt much blood at all.
Yea those raids on the spice fields were incredible & obviously the show down with everyone attacking wow.
A lack of the smackdown from Batista, we need to seriously celebrate this mans acting hes so good. but when he was desperate & freaking out he just owned it.
Those space ships are real right? Im sure they are…
Im very glad that after some flo exposition we did pick up exactly where we left, that was good, especially with that body.
Oh water draining in the different ways is so clever, i loved it, both as the nice ritual for the believer & to survive by their enemies.
So good luck everything heading to festivals in the coming months that want to win an oscar next year. Dune 2 is one of the easiest buzzer contenders ive ever done. It delivered in every single front. It is what cinema & film making & story telling is all about. & if you leave the cinema after watching that going meh (unless sci-fi isnt your thing) then i feel very sorry for you.
Its insanely fucking spectacular.
