Its time… 5 weeks america have had this before us, but now we get to watch it. Yes on the day they get it on streaming we get it in the cinema. It is time for Drive Away Dolls. A film id have seen, even if Pedro wasnt in it.
Friday 6:20 showing was half full. Im impressed. Very impressed but not impressed with one person. While at the cinema waiting for the film to start in Brighton there was a trailer for love lies bleeding Which has very strong female leads who have a relationship & looks very hot passionate & intense both the relationship & the film. Someone in my screening said out loud as the trailer ended “that looks crap, shove it down our throat why don’t you”. It was meet by tuts & hisses I hope for their sake they were being sarcastic in their comments but I don’t think they were for a number of reasons. For those who don’t know Brighton & Hove is the most proud & inclusive city in the uk (London says they are but it’s us) so much so you often end up apologising for calling someone a him or she before asking for pronouns We are proud & we love it. So they were sitting in a cinema in Brighton on a Friday night about to watch Drive Away Dolls which is a film a round trip with lesbian leads & a queer & sexual film (the warnings are clear from the bbfc about that). 15mins into the film someone who came from the area where that sound was made left & didn’t come back They clearly realised this wasn’t the film for them & was about to get sexier Drive Away Dolls isn’t the kind of film you pick to watch at random. Also at no point in any of the press, reviews, posters or trailers has it shown it for anything different from what it actually is I mean promo was pussy cookies at a festival screening. Why did this person decide to spend their Friday watching that It wasn’t like they were dragged along by a friend either. I just don’t get it it was very weird & not the best thing to say or react to in a cinema in Brighton. Urgh some people seriously Educate yourselves idiots or just don’t bother coming Let the rest of us have fun in peace. Rant over about 1 idiot my bad.
Trailers were Immaculate, The Persian Version (always funny when youve seen the film) planet of the apes, fall guy & Love lies bleeding obviously was 5.
& then the film started… In one of my Pedro Group chats we have two words that explain something & that is Harry Styles… im sure you can work that out but it happens again.
If you are going to watch this film for Pedro Pascal or Matt Damon… Dont. I recon i saw Pedro for a more run time in all the trailers ive seen than he is in the film. But damn does the rather lovely collector called Santos look hot, so hot he needs to be put on ice…
At least Matt got a bit more to do. Also very clever mirroring for the start & the end, i love it when those details are so spot on. Makes you realise someone bothered & really took notice.
The whole press & promo for this film has been sexualised & i get it was about the LGBTQ+ community & who they dealt with going into the new millennium but it was still very odd. & then we found out what was in the brief case at last (& im glad it took forever to find out too) & i laughed a lot. I mean damn, but that is bloody funny. Naughty Santos… but why was he collecting them, he just had them. Its a weird thing to collect too.
The two leads were so good & funny. the sex obsessed one was the best but the sexual awaking was insane & full one, but not as full on as that first sex scene. I was laughing my head off going yep i get that & the rest of my cinema was sat there in silence while life was going down on one half of the screen & pleasure on the other. Was i the only person to understand that?
All the additional people who turn up for certain amounts of time do bring their all. ITs not like anyone was doing it for the shits & giggles. Even if they had 3mins of screen time they owned it.
Im sorry but we didnt need the trippy bit. It was never explained to start with & then when it was i was so lost by these random moments that didnt make sense throughout the rest of the film, that i didnt care about the reveal. I had worked out shiz was going to go down. Why not just do it as one trippy bit as a flash back while a certain character is waiting to do something. Yea that was too much of a tone shift for the film.
The turn of the millennium styling & speaking was nailed on too. I felt like i was 10 again ( but not if you get me) it got the music & houses & vibes spot of for that period.
Allice the dog was so funny & was also a McGuffin other than the car & its content, but yea that dog was naughty at points but it needed that.
So there are 2 henchmen who arent good & a boss of them. At one point something happens & we never see 1 of the guys again & then they just leave that moment. No there would have been so much more drama added to that & what made that moment happen. We never got our answers from it. It was bit like they needed people to chase them to add drama (even though they didnt know until 5mins before they were being tracked) & then they didnt know how do deal with them after the act 3 exposition dump.
This isnt going to break barriers or be an epic film, but it was very funny & i laughed a lot. & out man did look fine (bless him… those eyes) You can do a lots worse for road trip comedies than this one. It got its audience, yes it missed the mark in a few places, but considering some of the comedies ive seen recently this one is solid for the most part.
