well the way film twitter & letterboxd have been talking about this film in the last 3 months makes this sound like one of the greatest films thats ever been made. The hype for it is insane so i am really looking forward to this. I mean it was high up on my hit list for 2024, in 20th. & you know thats similar to where maverick was, so this film has a huge chance of being special.
I was at the sold out Tuesday night viewing. I know. Mainly millennial & gen Z. an older couple walked in to watch it & one group of people went what are they doing here. how dare they.
Trailers, Furiosa, Fall Guy, Planet of the Apes, Garfield & urgh what was it… there was 5 i cant remember.
& then the films started… I watched the same film as everyone else right?
Everyone felt like they were a supporting character in their own film, which says a lot. Yes there are three leads in this who are all good. But there were points where i didnt know who the lead was or whos story it truly was. Was it the child star who lived out her dream through someone else? was it the worlds best who needed a pick me up? or was it the underdog user wanting to prove a point? We spent time with them all, but it was so all over the place i didnt know who wanted the outcome from this. Im guessing its Zendaya as she was the main name linked to it but she felt a little lost at points. They were all good & had chemistry but it wasnt as exceptional as the internet had said it was.
The time jumps were weird. I get flash backs were used to tell the story but suddenly leaping back 2 weeks before to then 2 years before & then it to say 2 days later & then 4 years before was like hang on movie. Calm the fuck down. Yes it was a good way to tell the story but it leapt all over the place too much at one point & i was just like hang on was this 3 years ago or 2 days ago.
I do like how each act was a set of tennis that was good, but ultimately that tennis match was a waste of time if im honest & did we get a true outcome, no we didnt. I felt cheated at that. I needed to know. It actually was a complete waste of time.
You know i said i hate uperty people, well turns out i also hate selfish & rude & self absorbed people too. Which is what the 3 people in this film were, even if they didnt want to be. No one actually had any redeemable qualities at all. Maybe thats why i found it hard to like them. I get the to win & be the best you have to selfish but to be selfish in everything including your kid, nah i aint got time for that.
The film hardly ever reference any other tennis player than the three in questions, maybe 2 more. But no real ones at all. If that guy was that god he should have at least had a line about being better than Djokovic or being his competition. They just wiped that from history.
There was one scene which was so so good. The bedroom scene. It didnt cut away or edit & was so interesting that it went from one way of feeling to the complete opposite. That was really good & had some very good acting in it.
The make out scene, which has been teased for the last year was hilarious. Most of the cinema was on the edge of their seats for that, but i giggled a lot when it wasnt what people thought it would be.
Its not a sports film people. If your going to watch it for a film about Tennis, you actually get more tennis in the film wimbledon than this.
This was a solid good film, but based on the hype & the way everyone had talked about it, i expected this to blow by sock off & hit me for 6 (cricket reference i know) but it was just a good movie & wasnt as oh this is phenomenal as everyone had told me this would be. Good but underwhelming.
