Letterboxd have been on about this for ages. Its constantly popping up in my you should watch list so here i am on Monday night. Trip 1 of 3 in 5 days this week (just like the good old glory days) for Bottoms. Everythign ive seen of it or heard about it makes me think its going to be hilarious.
Time to play yur favourite game. How many people were with me in the 8pm showing of this… yes there was a 7:30 as well but still how many. If your guessed 1 group of 3 then congratulations. They were 3 uni girls who laughed & giggled the whole way through & at one point when i sneezed one of them said bless you awwwwwwwwww.
Trailers, the marvels (yes) Saltburn (seeing that wednesday) Thanksgiving (probably) Dream Scenario (yes) So that was a good little set for me to get me ready for the lead up to award season.
& then the film started… & me & the group of 3 girls had a brilliant giggling time watching it. & we all laughed at the same points too.
I’ve seen so many coming of age films, but this one got the awkwardness & randomness of it all so right that it just worked & showed how it is done. Also it knew it had to be clever at points too & not just talked you on for a generic ride. I mean for the most part it was generic but it nailed it. The cliches were bang on.
What was nice was that it showed how rumours spread & how toxic the world & people can be when people just over hear a lie & then it gets out of control. & the more out of control it got the more i forgot it was a lie so when it was explained at the end of act 2 i was like ahhhhhh i forgot that was all fake. It was so good.
I love how there are little hints dropped throughout the film, as to how the finale is going to happen, so much so that when it does come to the show down & everything is revealed your like oh of course thats the bloody case. That was so obvious. I should have picked up on that. A second viewing will turn you into DiCaprio from Once upon a time… it really will.
The two leads were good, but everyone else was just a little bit average, but because they are all being irritating teenagers, they get away with it slightly. IT works in that respect, but some of it is over acting but its bad over acting especially the 2nd player on the football team. But there teacher, hes crazy but brilliant.
Why moving from act 2 to 3 do we hear the majority of the song complicated from Avril Lavine? It just felt random. I get that they are that age & it was complicated. But if you were the 15 year olds this should be the target audience for (other than Letterboxd crazy people like me) are you even going to know about that song. I doubt your parents were into Let Go they were all too old unless they had you when they were 16. I mean i was happy. I love that album & thats an amazing song.
Also why did we have the random person pass on knowledge to her? at no point in the rest of the film had it been mentioned that some one would be helpful or pass on wisdom. I get she needed the epiphany but still, was never mentioned before it.
The actual fight club they set up was cool & as much as it was for the right & reasons it was good. & it was actually violent too & everyone did get involved & the group therapy too. Was i meant to laugh that hard… im not sure but i did. Especially with that teach. He was wrong but it made him so right it was what was needed for sure.
The final show down was as crazy as it had lead us to be. I thought they were going to be like no no thank you. I thought our only pay off was going to be the ex house & car, but no the finale bloody delivered &was violent & earnt its right to be. Seriously you laugh & go oh my fucking god in equal amounts & it just has you sitting there going go on hit them again. & the distraction ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. I knew it was going to happen at the wrong point.
Also bloopers & alternative takes with the credits? yes please. Proper early 00s style. Ahhhh im never going to hate that.
The film didnt outstay its welcome. When it got cliché, it knew to move on & change it up & when it was over i was like yea that was fun & made me laugh & was so worth my time.
I had fun watching it, had a big smile on my face & the letterboxd besties got it right woohoo. Well worth your time peoples.
