Time for an advanced preview of Between the Temples. Ive seen one trailer for this in the last couple of weeks, so im hoping its as funny as it looks, & takes its religion with a pinch of salt. I can be hopeful cant i.
There was about 20 people in my screening with me. I did feel young which was nice for a change, because so many people were in their mid 50s so that was interesting.
Trailers, Sing Sing (yes) Speak no evil (maybe) The Critic (yes) Lee(maybe) & The Out Run (looks so cool hopefully thats still in cinemas when im back from holiday).
& then the film started… & for a film about religion it didnt shove it down your throat that this should be what you are doing.
There were 2 dinner scenes in this film, with two different families & our two leads. Both felt really organic but also so full of chaos & judgemental moments. I loved them both. They were the highlights of the film for sure. The last one just had so much shit going down it was hard to keep up with but when you sat there & thought about it, yes this would be what would happen at a family meal time.
Was not expecting there to be a fanfiction, smutty part of the film that then went crazy. I was giggling a lot when that happened & how out of the blue it was, especially as it had been brought up that the writing was so important. It went from safe to kinky very quickly, but then didnt give us the kinkiness.
Despite it being about religion, it was a modern take on it which was nice. One of the most important parts of the film is when he is lacking in his faith & he goes to a church to talk to a priest about their rules & religion & hes very much willing to have a dialogue. Maybe some higher up people in religions could ask others about this as well. Religion has a lot to answer for.
I liked the dynamic but after like there 2nd session it was oh okay then so this isnt going to move much further, although when they got high that was very funny.
What is it with parents trying to match you up with people or ask you to start dating? Im glad its as irritating in movies as it is in the actual real world.
He went from being depressed to being meh very quickly.
If im honest there got to one point where i looked at my watch to see what the time was & was like hang on ive still got an hour to go. It bored me a bit at points & i was just like please add some drama to this. I know i often sit here & go sometimes serious films dont need drama but this one did.
It was well acted, but there were points where some cast members were overthinking thing & i was like nah i cant be dealing with this. It felt forced at points. There was clearly a gap between some actors talents & others. It just didnt work when one person is acting for all their might & the person opposite them just is going well ive got a lien i need to deliver in a minute, let me just sit here vacantly thinking about it. A lack of acting consistency.
Im sure there will be some people who find this sweet & charming, but i am pretty certain when i get to my year end review, that the only reason i will remember seeing this film, is because it was in the second half of the year. A decent story, but other than the dinner scenes it was meh.
