saturday morning films at the cinema are becoming my thing at the moment, they are, & im not sure why. But i do know why this week. Ive got 2 more film trips booked for midweek & i really want to see Ambulance & actually still have an okay week when for chill time or flat stuff, so that is what i am doing. Bring on the loud explosions of Michael Bay.
Its not often the cinema has only odd ones in it, but it did. So i looked at the first couple & then a few more & then realised i was not the target audience. All of the other odd ones where male & about my dads age. Not one millennial or woman among them. I bet they all saw me there & went ahh shes only here for Jake isnt she ( i mean i was there to watch a 2h ambulance chase which happens to have one of the most underrated actors in the world in it who also happens to be very handsome but thats beside the point).
Trailers Morbius (yes booked) The lost City (yes) Unbearable weight (yes advanced preview booked) & the Northman (AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH THAT LOOKS INSANE IM SOLD ALI PLUMB {YES}).
& then the film started… so you all know what a MICHAEL BAY MOVIE is right (& youve got to say it like that like you have to shout GERRRRRRRAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD BUTTTTTTTTTTLLLLLLLLLLLEEER if you get me) well this may well be the most Michael Bay movie of all the Michael Bay movies.
So did Michael Bay get a new set of Drones at christmas 2019? He loved using them to make this film didnt he. I mean when i first saw that swooping spinning shoot i was like oh okay then thats interesting & a good way to get this. After 40minutes i was over it tho. I mean if you want to get your moneys worth out the the drones & spidercam, he defiantly did. It just went from oh okay to really were doing this again. I mean that is what Bay does in his films so… should have expected that. Its just usually with CGI explosions tho.
Thats not to say there werent any explosions or crashes. Oh there was plenty of that. & okay yes its not the Armageddon, Pearl Harbour or Transformers levels, but they were good & over the top & what i expected to see. So slow-mo bullets as well he showed off with. Far fetched & over the top but in a real situation, so felt more impactful.
The actual ambulance chase was pretty intense too & it does take up 1h30 of a 2h15min film which you know you get what you pay for. It is an ambulance chase this film there is no hiding from it at all.
Did anyone else work out exactly what was going to happen 5 minutes into the film & how it was going to end for everyone, including that little girl in the unrelating car crash? I did. I mean i am a proper film nerd & my mind always tries to do that when i see a film.
Jake acted his arse off & i know im a member of Jake needs an oscar fan club, but he really does. The script was not the best, but when he was angry & was giving out orders, the power in that voice & the desperation was stunning. Seriously you could put that man in the crappest film in the world & he would make it at least 2 stars. Hes just got it hasnt he. Come on academy when will you recognise him again. He is the reason to watch it. If i worked in a bank & he turned up wearing all that to rob us & would have a me moment & be like oooh yes sir. Take all the money. All he would have to do is scowl.
Everyone in that ambulance has a good dynamic, it really really does work. There are various life or death situations that happen in the back of it & it does just work. Its a good balancing act, it does just work & because it does you believe in all of them, be them good or bad or near death.
That dog… That bloody dog… really… i mean i laughed a lot at that & nearly spat my tea out.
Of course the phone dies in the middle of surgery in a slow part of the ambulance chase. & her solution to it all, really was foreshadowed earlier on in the film.
LA roads have never been that clear in there life have they. I mean yes they put blocks in place but still, LA is never, even in a pandemic, ever that quiet.
So i know people will say its crap (i see you peoples) however i have decided with films like this, this year, to see if it does what it says on the tin. & yes it did. I got a suspense filled ambulance chase which lasted for the majority of the film, with Michael Bay randomness thrown in. A better story & script at points would have made it epic. I had a bloody good time watching it & actually went for a walk around the marina before i drove home, probably for the best.
