Time for an advanced screening, which ive seen a trailer for a few times, however ive looked when its coming out… Its the same week as Batman. Yeah the only way im going to see that at all is to go to london, not happening. So an advanced screening of Ali & Ava is exactly what i need on a tuesday night.
Not as many people here as there have been for an advanced screening before maybe 30 or so. I also think i am the youngest person here. Thats a real shame. I want to make a friend at one of these. Turned out though i didnt need anyone. The guy who served me popcorn at the screening, & was trying to work out why my gift card wasnt working, we ended up having a chat about star wars & lightsabres & lego. yea it was bloody epic, so Paul at brighton Cineworld cheers.
Trailers… there wasnt any. Seriously. We had the family card offer, dont forget to use your taste card & then the fact that saturday is cineworld day. No films at all wow. So the film which started at 7:30 actually properly started at 7:39 wow.
& then the film started… so lets say an alien from a parallel universe lands here on earth & walks up to you & asks shows me the best representation of modern life in the UK… you show them this film & they will understand exactly whats going on.
Adeel & Claire as Ali & Ava are just so brilliant. They make the most simple things in the film feel so natural & organic & loving. Thats what the film needed to portray. We didnt need much drama, the drama of every day life is sometimes just enough & is the most beautiful of all & seeing how there friendships & lives blossom throughout is brilliant.
There are some real family struggles in this film that are very heart breaking (which do include domestic abuse & serious mental health issues) but that was yet wasnt the point of the film. It shows how they just get on with it & how its not the main focus of the film. Life does go on & that sometimes these things are in the background that you just cope with until its too much. That is what life is like & it deals with it so well.
The score & the soundtrack was epic. It really did sum up the world right now & was angry when the film was angry & had a smooth or loving vibe at the right times. It just felt right & calmed your senses throughout.
There were points with some of the family stories where you felt you were intruding & then you realised you were at the cinema. Especially when drama kicked off or something was very personal.
Kids moaning about tea & just fancying some chips yea thats real life. & so is slagging off where you live & going its dodgy but not that dodgy & then its dodgy like you’ve said… yeah as brits we do that well. Does anyone else in the world slag off their home town or village. Here where i live, im in a good area of the village but theres some places where i just wont go. The rest of the world are always all like oh yea im from blah but in the uk we we go were from blah oh well.
There were lots of early landscape shoots especially of the night sky, & then that made sense with about 30 mins to go. as a connoisseur of the moon i liked that, it was lush. Why am i obsessed with the night sky or actually just the sky in general? Thats a genuine question to myself.
There were all sorts of weird britishisums that the world when they watch this just wont get, but in my cinema we all chuckled at some bits, it felt like we were in on the jokes & the rest of the world will be like hang on whats this. Its like the opening ceremony of the 2012 olympics.
It is a very hard watch at time with some of the attitudes which are unfortunately still around today, but thats the truth with the world the issue is there & could be behind your neighbours door. It was sweet & heart-breaking & well worth a watch. It may have made me sad, but i did smile at that last shoot that you know after youve been through all of that there is a small flicker of hope sometimes that you just need to hang on to.
I think we all need a bit of hope at the moment. Some light in the shade.
