Whos up for a tuesday night straight after work cinema trip for a horror film? Yep come on peoples lets go see AfrAId. A film where AI is the evil. The trailer looks decent & i think this is really going to be clever & phycological. So bring it on.
Me & 10 others in the cinema for this, mainly millennials. I think one older couple in like their 50s but that was it.
Trailers, what is this Hugh Grant horror film, im in. Also Never Let Go, The terrifier, the Substance & surprise surprise Speak no evil (i will be able to quote those bits of the film by the time i see it).
& then the film started… I got home & had to google if you can give a film on Letterboxd no stars.
Turns out you cant.
Yea.
It was that crap. Makes Unfrosted & Madam Web look decent & that is saying a lot. So it very generously got a half start on letterboxd as anything else wouldnt add to their rating system.
There was a point in the last 5 mins of the film where John Chos character sighs & looks despondent. Im not sure if it was him acting or going thank god this is over. He was doing everything he could to hold this together. It just wasnt working & he was fighting with the script. I was sighing & rolling my eyes in desperation too hoping it would be over soon.
I get this film shows the dangers of AI, i really do. It does also show the good in it & im sure the AI on my laptop is reading this right now going what the fuck is she saying about me. But the AI was only as weird as the people who used it. & there was no one & i mean no one in this film that was at all likeable. Give the tools to stupid people who abuse it & with anything else its going to turn against you.
There was one good story line it used, but it was kind of a side point & then once that story got really dark it was over & nto gone back to again. Also the end of that storyline was spoiled in the trailer, i thought it was going to be much more of theme rather than just a few cut away bits.
The twists & the way people were going to react, a 5 year old could have worked out.
What was with that family at the start. It was never really explained who they were, or why they were one thing or who those people were. That all just sorted itself out for no reason & if im honest were completely a waste of time when they didnt appear & then when they did.
His first job was crap, then it was sold, then the new job, what happened. I mean there was other staff there & they all just accepted it after all that. It was all just a bit to oooh look at us we can make tech but were never going to really explain how or why & what all these other people do.
The script was flimsy. Ive written more detail in 500 words than this film did.
The jump scares didnt even have me flinching.
The last straw was her dad. I was like nope no no. But i stayed just in case the finale was going to save the film.
So congratulations AfrAId. You had the potential to be a really cool psychological thriller that really made people thing about the dangers of AI & our reliance on technology, but you bored me into a submission. I had more fun chatting to the guy who scanned my ticket then watching this film & he said 6 word to me.
