Time for an advanced preview, once again. Time for Conclave. Think the rest of the world got this 3 weeks ago but im now seeing it a full 3 weeks before its actually out which is nice. Maybe this review will be posted before then… who knows. But this is surly going to be talked about at awards season.
Trailers, HELLO TO JASON ISAACS!!!! His new film actually made me put my phone down to watch it. We also had we live in time, wicked, Queer & there was one more but for the life of me i cant remember.
It was almost full my screening. All sorts of ages a proper vast set of people all clearly here.
& then the film started… well this really is awards seasons for sure & im hoping we keep this up for sure.
Finnes was phenomenal. There was not other way to describe his performance. Completely compelling, couldnt take your eyes off him. Wondering exactly what he would find out & how he would deal with it. Just insane. If he is not nominated at awards season, as Craig is favourite right now, its a travesty.
The rest of the cast were so good too. I mean who doesnt love the Tucci. But every cardinal & nun & person involved brought it. Seriously did. It was an acting master class from everyone. Even the people who were just extras or had a few lines. No one was misplaced. The head nun only had like 3 scenes, but i can see why people are talking awards season for her. Also she always just said what she had to scowled then left. It was funny at one point.
I loved all the secrets & lies & how it all went down. It made your moral compass change to as to who you would vote for or what you would do. You really didnt know which way it was going to go at all. Really left you on the edge of your seat as to who was going to be named pope. The score helped with this too, properly jarring & atmospheric.
The last scene when the pope is selected (its about a conclave that was always going to happen) will up set some people for sure. But it proves an important point as to how does the modern world cope with religion. Its an important question that does need asking & i live that it was slowly building up to this point. If certain people dont like this it might cost it a best picture nomination come march.
We did lost of profound monologing & speeches & proving points. They were all good but after the 3rd it was a bit like oh okay another one then. Yes they were all well acted but it all just felt a little bit too much, show them off yes but i was done with them by about 40 minutes.
I love the pomp & circumstance of the popes death (its called conclave they are selecting a new pope of course hes dead) & how there was all these rituals with what they had to say & do & seal the room & all that stuff but the second he was out of that room, he was just another dead body on the way to the morgue. Didnt matter that he was head of the church, he was dead so hes going in a van on a stretcher just like everyone else, after all we are all mortal.
Do they really live like that when they select a new pope? In their own little rooms, talking but not talking with no influence, being bussed in? It was intriguing for sure. Also do they use that cinema other than for scheming?
I wish their hadnt been that explosion. I get that they wanted to prove nothing is sacred anymore but it was a bit much & then they continued like nothing has happened. (the explosion is in the trailer its not a spoiler).
A film that should have shoved god down my throat actually didnt which was actually very nice.
Its impressive & is very well acted. It does have a few oooh really moments to stop it being incredible but i see acting nominations & script for this film come march. Its a must if your collecting them all for awards season.
