11 days with no cinema. I should say that while i was on holiday we went to an outlet & they had a huge cinema there & my bestie litrally put her hands on my shoulders as soon as i saw it & dragged me away. My pleads of “but they have Spanish minions” were ignored. So here i am back at cineworld, ready to see if this house with the rope is worth it or not.
Friday at 6pm with a salted maple & Caramel latte is perfect for me. Im in my out of the way seat so when i jump no one sees me. Id say theres about 30 people in my screening to see this but when i left there was so many people waiting for the 8:20 screening.
Trailers, Hugh Grant being unhinged (thats what i will call it when i see it by the way) Venom, Salem’s lot (which was on there twice i thought the screening was broken like a glitch in the matrix) & the terrifier 3.
& then the film started… welcome back to the meh boring horror corner for me. Its been a while.
Want to turn me off a film instantly… start it off with frog noises. i was like nope no no no not for me. ME & frogs dont get on, we really dont. Its just not a thing. They can hop on.
I love that act 2 had the balls to end like that. I really did. Because then it relied in you believing the story & which kids side you picked to go along with. It was clever in doing that, but then (& no offence kids) the kids looked like they needed a bit more guidance. & im saying that after my last cinema trip before holiday was Speak No Evil which had 2 kid performances in it. They just felt al little too wooden when they were the stars of the film. With Halle they were good, but other wise they needed some help.
There were a couple of jump scares at the start, but after that, there was only like 2 more really upsetting scenes but nothing to make you flinch or go shit & look away. The scary score was okay, but it created tension which then wasnt frightening, & then as we got through the film you were like ahh here are those 5 score tropes again.
So this family have a dog. Its an end of the world apocalypse film. Its been winter. Those kids are old enough. Why had the possibility of having to kill & eat the dog not come up before? Seriously. I get you shouldnt eat your pets i really do, but if it is the end of the world, she should have mentioned this for a long time to them. Its not good parenting. & then putting it to a bloody vote. Seriously. She should have just killed it without them knowing & it would have solved all their issues. I mean they even mention early on to not feed him when they dont have enough food for themselves.
The rope is an interest complex to add to the film. But its length & how its cut & easily taken off & not always attached to the house, its baffling. It was like im important to everyone safety but we are going to have points where the rope doesnt matter.
If the kid sleep walks why not lock the fucking doors at night at a height he cant reach?
So how did those kids have clothes that fit them if the world had ended? Seriously? They were growing preteens. Only at one point is it mentioned the shoes dont fit but still. Bit convenient. Also then what happened to the old clothes & their rubbish & also then couldnt they tie the clothes to the rope which they had grown out of so they could go further.
Halle was alright especially in act 3, that was freaky, but its not like McAvoy before her. Also her mental health issue are never really addressed. I get the world ending makes you do & feel stuff but still, its a bit much to not really address it. I get that there was no one really there to tell her if it was all in her head or not but it needed to be more looked into.
I like that you didnt see the evil & then you did, especially at the start. But then it was over used. It got a little bit boring & like i get it they cant see you or that 1 person can. We get it. We havent forgotten in the last 5 minutes.
Why does everyone live in a bloody forest in a horror film? ITs not a good idea.
That house was weird, to weird. It was the scariest thing in the film (except for the at point lazy script & frogs). Also preying to it for protection. That was a bit much.
Well i saw it & it was okay, but this isnt a go to for future spooky seasons for sure. This can join the meh horror film collection of the year for sure.
