It is time. Its the only MCU film this year, so this is going to be carnage. The press for this has been off the scale, so its time, to see if this really does live up to the hype. LFG!
6:30 showing on the Thursday after opening at midnight was sold out. Completely sold out. Im glad too. Mainly millennials. The two guys to the right of me one of them was teaching another how to use letterboxd. How do i know this, because i wanted to but him & tell him actually what you need to do is… Im a bad film nerd, but it makes me the best film nerd.
Trailers… It happened the full 3min30sec Gladiator II Trailers. I lost it, & so did the girl to my left. We both got a bit giddy. Her boyfriend (remember him for later) rolled his eyes & went seriously at us both & we both laughed. There was also trailers for Venom, Wicked, Trap & Mufasa (hadnt actually seen the Mufasa one until that point).
& then the film started… Well that was fan service if i have ever seen it.
I know by now there are spoilers all over the internet, hence ive ramped up my cinema club writing to try & get them all done as soon as possible, however this is still a cinema club review so im going to keep them for a minimum.
I gasped 3 times. The First Gasp was one actor & the second was who they were & then the third was someone coming back & i was like oh my god. & i have no idea what noise i made during another reveal, Im not sure anyone in my screening did. Remember eye rolling boyfriend who sat a few seats along, well he lost his shit. Clearly it was something he had always wanted but my entire row & the people around him heard that. It was incredible his reaction. Its weather i go see this again just to hear that noise or hear what happened afterwards.
The MCU is a little bit too dependant on cameos now, if im honest. It was like they knew it made everyone’s life in the Spiderman films & then was like we are going to do this now & have someone else in it. It kind of spoils it when people dont turn up. Why does every movie have to have them. I mean i loved the thousands of Deadpool’s for that final fight, but i spent too long trying to work out who they all were, instead of enjoying that battle. But shout out to Peggy as Dogpool.
The opening credits dance & scene & music… incredible. Bye Bye Bye is now back in the chart. It was a millennial dream. & i love how it delt so early on with the elephant in the room with Wolverine & how he was or wasnt dead.
It was hard to keep up with the in jokes about pop culture & the past & the MCU & all the shiz going down. This will be so much easier on a rewatch to go ahhh he said that or referenced this, that will be cool. It called out a lot about MCU TV that not everyone has watched which you are all just assumed to know about. The Void was cool for so many jokes & so was that 4th wall break in the TVA.
There were lots of cool fights in it. The one in the Car was the most incredible. It also before it all kicked off had some epic acting by Jackman. Hes still got it. I mean he never lost it, but to go from stupid stuff to deliver line like that, its bloody cool.
Im going to say something unpopular now, it lacked its charm. The first 2 films(i rewatched them before this god knows when you will get a Deadpool 2 DVD review) but i like how act 3 in the first had to change due to running out of budget & how number 2 they went for it but kept in its lane. They had the money to show off, but it lost its character. I mean at no point other than 1 person did any of his friends form the first 2 films come to help or he referenced other than just saving his world. Yes they arent from the house of mouse, but if you want this to be in this film, then at least have the xmen come & help. I wanted more of a team up. Yes its good we get the wolverine team up, but if his family is that important let them help.
A soundtrack to make a millennial feel nostalgic. & the 4 seconds of showman, i was laughing hard.
Hugh, damn that body. He was Jack-ed-man! Sorry had to say it.
But he & Ryan always have amazing chemistry & it wouldnt have worked without that. I do know it was always going to work, but wolverine isnt the most people person is he.
The reference to Stan Lee had me going awwwwwwwwwwww.
There is an end credit scene people ( you will be happy to know 4 people left my screening to use the bathroom & then walked back in for it). ITs not important to the MCU but it is to the film. Also as the credits rolled the tribute to the xmen & fox super heroes before was so cool & worked really well.
Emma was a good villain, she brought it with her power & was a complete bitch for sure, however, at points i forgot there was a villain in it, as i was to invested in the main duo. Also the other villain was good but again easy to forget they were the main protagonist about it until they showed up.
It was a lot of fun & delivered a lot to keep people happy. Is it the best part of the MCU, no. But it made it feel fresh & brought some life back into the party of superheroes. Yes there is still super hero fatigue, but if you get it right at least once a year, we are willing to forgive you the crap. Its well worth a watch for the MCU & for the other Deadpool films (although i still prefer the first 2).
