Christmas 2023 done, now for the fun of trying to watch as many films as i can before we get to 2024, a foolish idea i know. but one that has to be done before we hit 2024 is Ferrari. Adam Driver as an older Italian again, im not going to complain & racing… bring the vroom vroom. & lets see if we miss out on the 100 club.
I thought there would be a lot more millennials in the screening for this but there wasnt, which shocked me a little. Lots of much older people. Id say a half full screen too which is pretty good as well. Obviously lots of people like me are like i just need out of the christmas stuff.
I honestly cant remember the trailers for this im sorry peoples.
& then the film started… & considering its run time, i needed more, i really really did.
I know this was about Ferraris life but i thought we were going to see much more about cars & racing then there actually was. I mean dont get me wrong it was a very good history recap. But from the trailer & the press tour (which for 6 weeks was only 1 of 2 films being advertised so it had everyone attentions) i thought there would be more racing & more about Ferrari other than the fact it was running out of money & had to win. What i saw was a interesting story but a bit more racing would have been really nice. It should have been so much more intense then it should have actually been.
Adam Driver was good very very good. If you need an American to play a grumpy Italian, call Adam for sure. Also he looked good with the short hair. Penelope Cruz was phenomenal but there wasnt enough of her. Shes the one whos likely to get the oscar nominations, because that was some stunning acting. Just made me gasp. I didnt realise Patrick Dempsey was in this so that was like ooooh okay when he turned up.
So theres one crash they show in the trailer & that happened early on in the film & then know Ferrari & the history & the way they were making the film i was like ahh they are going to leave a rather horrible crash out. But no they didnt they had the guts to do it & im very glad that they did. They showed how horrible it really was & im very glad they did. Because its all about winning & flamboyance & then sometimes tragedy does happen in these sports & lives are ruined. I mean when we went to good wood a few years ago to watch the cars go up the hill, there were signs everywhere going there is a very small chance you could die her so please be cautious. But back in these days there was even more of a chance this would happen. It needed to be shown that theres more to life than just racing.
So this race happens & then something else happens & i was like ahh so now we get more of a fall out do we more of an explanation, but no it then put the end cards up as to what happened & i was like hang on say what? We need to still address A B & C before we end this is a joke right? For its long run time to then end without those last few bits happening i was like hang on, i need more. That moment made me realise that as much as a lot did happen in the film, also a lot didnt actually happen in the film.
The editing & the noise & the score made it feel like racing. It really did. It felt like you were there on the edge of you seat feeling intense as stuff went down & it just worked. There were some points where i was getting goosebumps & shivers down my spine. It worked that well.
We spent a lot of time with the man himself but he was only ever interesting when he talked about cars or passion. The family drama other than the shares did nothing for me at all. I wasnt here for that story i was here for the race of Ferraris life which would turn them into the greatness (& mess in FA) that they are today. I didnt need to know about his affair because other than the shares situation it had no effect on the bloody car or the race.
I just felt like i was promised one film about being driven & creating something iconic & being driven & a car film, but i got a more human film. If the trailer had made me think i was seeing that id have probably enjoyed it more. What i saw was good but was not what was advertised to me over the last few months. It needed more & unfortunately it got nowhere near delivering that.
