Spoilers (its over a year old i can spoil it)
Friday night concertation film night, as i wasnt after a classic tonight, & i had also watched a 2h youtube show so i needed something a little bit mindless & fun to watch that i hadnt seen before. So i asked my film family on twitter, which has grown quite a bit in the last 6 months (almost at the magic 100 figure{haha now over 200 wow thanks peoples}) & Nate (if you click on it you can see their profile ILYB) recommended i watch The Old Guard. It was on my watch list & i had been meaning to get round to it, so i got a drink & put it on. Its going to be my escapism for this evening. I also know very little about this film too so im really intrigued.
That was a lot of fun. A lot more fun that i was expecting. Especially as this was the era when netflix films didnt nail their endings & mucked a lot up, so im very impressed by this.
There were a few too many characters if im honest. Some of them i felt we missed out on some back story & development but i did at some point connect to most of them.
Charlize was phenomenal. It was almost like she was Furiosa again. Simply captivating in her moments of power & weakness. She was the best built character int he film & she bossed every single part of it. Whenever she was on screen i felt happy that it was in safe hands. Her set pieces were good to, she really did kick arse. & her back story was so heart-breaking too.
Its weird seeing Kiki as an up & coming person when in the last 18 months shes been in so many films as a bit part all the way up to the lead. She showed her potential here & i cant wait to see what else shes going to do going forward.
The rest of the cast, i became that DiCaprio meme where he points at everyone & goes ahhh its them. Seriously it was almost constant. Although the one i yelled out Holy Fuck at was Dudley Dursley from Harry Potter (Harry Melling). I know hes been other stuff since potter & looks completely different but i did just sit up & go oooh wow. Yea. There were lots of good supporting people in this & every single one of them nailed it.
When they all die basically as the opening titles stop rolling i was like, the fuck is going on. As i didnt have a clue what happened in this film it shocked me & then they all got up & i was like ahhhhhhhhhhhhh okay that makes sense. For all of 30seconds i was thinking ahh this is gonna be a flashback film of this group & that we find out what leads them to the death we see at the start. & then they kicked arse & killed people & yea it was good.
All of the fight set pieces were pretty cool too. However the final showdown in act 3 did start off really well & then was a bit more generic & standard. It gripped you by starting off cool & intense & like yea this is gonna be amazing, & then it trailed off slightly & was like oooh okay. I mean the push out the window ha, but there was a good 5mins before that were it was just a little too average if im honest.
Films love using McLaren for a lab or a big walk way, they really do. So when they arrived in the UK & it was all surrey england & we were going to have a shot of this place, i was like ahh its going to be the technology centre. & it wasnt. WOW thats a first or this millennium.
I did spend most of the time wondering which one was going to be the betrayer & going its not gonna be the guy from the Danish Girl, hes to obvious. & then it was him & i was like really. But he wasnt let off the hook & then he was still punished at the end, which was nice he got what was coming to him.
Its never really explained how they get there powers, but with the number of superhero films i watch, i dont question that too much anymore. But then the sudden reason to lose the power & the foreshadowing people who they save, i need to know more about that. If they could go over that a bit more in the sequel i would really appreciate that. It would be good if i knew a little more about that. I mean Chiwetels wall was like the theory guys meme with all the stuff & how its actually for good & how he wanted to see if it was real. I liked that.
I liked the open relationships being covered too & people just being who they are too. I loved that. Proving that people are just people & you cant help who you fall in love with. As an ally & from the home of inclusion in the uk, i love that.
I love lucid dreaming, but shared dreams is a little too much. I dont want to share my dreams with anyone so that freaks me out a little bit. Again thats not really explained either, but as a dreamer, again i went along with it. Also feeling the pain as it happens ouch ouch ouch. Yea this film did need a bit more expositions at times.
Are all modern safe houses abandoned churches? weve reached that stage have we. I mean it was cool (& they were watching the liverpool game happy days) but theres been a few of these recently. I mean my abandoned church is a night club so i cant complain to much about repurposing in them. Guessing its still sanctuary which ever way you look at it. Some of the lighting in that scene was beautiful.
The random person they all thought was in the river showing up at the end gave me so many questions. A lot of questions. I know its to keep you until the next one, but still. I was just like no you dont drop that now. No way. & no way were their drinks that cheap in that london pub, no way pepe.
There was a set piece in the plane that was very cool & chill & i loved it quite a bit. It just rocked & that scene is what i would have promoted the movie with, it was very slick & had a lot of lessons for all sorts of people for the rest of the film to learn.
& some of those weapons at points were so out there. I can imagine a huge chat about who was gonna have the coolest thing when they were picking before filming. I mean most of them end up with guns, but there are some that are bloody spectacular.
I had a bloody good time watching it & i will re-watch this again, now knowing what im going to get from it. It was super cool & is perfect for a beer & snacks on a friday night. It just flows & you at no point think oooh this is dragging. Its definitely a good one for that period of netflix originals.
Nate, i trust you to pick popcorn action movies from now on.
