i love me a secret screening. No idea what you are going to watch & well before you can find out any spoilers. So tonight is gonna be good. Its also a very busy week for me 3 films in 7 days at the moment (listings for friday arent out yet) but this is gonna be good, very good. I feel it in my jellies.
screen 1 was id say 75% full. I had people come & sit next to me thats how full it was. & i booked this a long time ago. Every age range too from 18 year old to 70. All a buzz with what it was going to be. I chatted to the couple in the row behind me (mid to late 40s) who were of a similar opinion that it was going to be Dont Worry Darling, as it had premiered at Venice that day. The couple who sat next to me arrived during the last adverts before the film started so after the trailers.
Trailers… Im going to be upset if there isnt an Oppenheim trailer before any film i see now, its not right without it. Then there was a trailers for Smile, Halloween, Black Adam & then Dont Worry Darling & i just turned around to the couple & went shit. They were then really intrigued as to what it was gonna be.
& then up came the long gap which is deffinately on purpose with secret cinema to say what the film was gonna be… It was HATCHING!
I have never heard of this film but the test card said strong body horror, injury detail, violence & sickening scenes… & it was an 18. Im not sure i signed up for this. Well at least 20 people didnt because they walked out straight away.
& there was one other point where people walked out. It was a very disturbing scene at about the half way point. The the audience as one all just went ooooooooooooohhhhhhhhhhh noooooooooooo ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww & then we all knew what was coming next & when the shocking thing did we all started laughing. Im not sure we were meant to but we did. & after that point about a third of the cinema left. At this point i was like well this cant get any more fucked up that this, so lets stay for the rest of it. It was properly horrific & if youve seen it come chat to me & we can have a proper talk about it on twitter or insta.
I mean horror isnt my thing altho based on my last few review & stuff coming up maybe i now do properly know what part of horror is mine. But horror in Finnish… yea thats a different level entirely, your busy concentrating on the subtitles & reading so its a lot more intense & you are sitting there going oooooh what now. I jumped a couple of times watching it. I couldnt do my im watching not watching look.
There were not many redeemable characters in this at all. I mean the dad was okay, but i didnt know enough about him to feel sorry. I felt for her partner & his baby but only at the point where shit is about to go down & she works out whats happening to her. Up to that point i didnt. I also felt sorry for the hatching until stuff got weird.
So ive been voted by my friends as the person with an Instagram endgame… now after seeign this film, im less proud of that award. I mean its still cool, but not to that extent in the film. That was way too much & too perfect.
Weve seen plenty of films recently about not walking home at night on your own & stuff that goes down, the second she did that i was just like well this is your own fault now girl, youve got this coming to you. Take the fucking lift home you are in a horror film.
The score & cinematography were chilling at time & were properly like ooooooh not thats nicely done & that is very clever. I really liked that.
There was no act 2 it just goes from 1 to 3 straight away, which i am grateful for. I was very freaked out by it (hence why i dont do horror films out of the house after 6:10pm any later fucks me over{my night sleep on monday wasnt good})
Yea this isnt my genre of horror at all, when i went to talk to the people behind me at the film they were already at the end of the row before i could. So i didnt even get film friends. I mean for the niche crowd who this is for im sure they adored it. but ye this isnt for me at all.
However i am going to say ive come along way. back in 2015 when i started this blog, it was just for dvd films & doing all the disney movies. Imagine telling me then that in 2022, you will have a huge online film family who you love & you talk to them about Finnish body horror films because you can. Yea ive come along way indeed.
