Spoilers, yep this time im going to spoil it, so im sorry if youve not got round to this yet.

So what to watch. Ive already seen 3 films this bank holiday weekend, but ive got time & no reason to get up in the morning so i think its time to watch something ive seen before, & my head recently keeps going, its time to revisit dont look up again. So here i am ready to watch the world end again, which is actually a little scary when you think of it like that based on the current world circumstance. But hey its the way Adam does it.

I have delayed this review as long as i can but i really do just want to type about it so 8 months later is quite a hold on to not do this. So i am sorry if youve not seen it, this is your last chance to exit out of the review before i start typing

Right lets go & im going spoiler heavy to start

I love the fact they actually go yep the world fucking ended & it didnt all end happily ever after & everyone dies. So many disaster movies about an alien invasion or something hurtling towards earth do have an act 3 redemption for someone to save the day or the world or for part of humanity to survive. But dont look up… nope everyone dies. Brilliant. Absolutely brilliant to have the guts to do that. & thats why it was one of my films of the year last year.

DiCaprio is a bloody brilliant actor, he really is, hence i give out an award in his name every year. But when he has that rant on tv after everything hes been through & he just goes for it on the daily news show, its stunning. I remember watching it the first time & being like yea that was good, but this time knowing full well its coming up i was so prepped for it & just sat on the edge of my sofa in awe. Now imagine that on the big screen in the cinema that moment, Goosebumps. Just stunning some of the best acting in a very long time. Just wonderful.

Everyone does joke that the one main issue with this film is that DiCaprio is married to a woman of his own age & has an affair with someone his own age too & that would never happen in real life. I mean they do have a point, but he was just a normal guy at a college teaching kids so youd hope hed be married to a more normal person.

Jennifer Lawrence can never do any wrong at all & i relate to her character alot. Shes brilliant. from the moment she discovers the comet to the end, its amazing & there is a good 15mins at one point where she takes a back seat & then she comes back & she just owns it again. She really does have star power & the film doesnt work without her at all. I also love the fact that even tho the world is ending she still pissed off she had to pay for snacks that were free. That would so be something i would be hung up on, such a first world problem but it so would be.

The realisation when there maths & the science all collide & they realise that the world going to end, is brilliant. He tries to cover it up & then you just see the realisation on his face that the thing they all fear is not only going to happen but happen stupidly soon. Thats a brilliant scene.

I would really like to applaud Mark Rylance for being a complete & utter dick & cockwomble in this film. He does it so well & he fits the corporate dickward role very well. & everything that comes out of his mouth you just sit there going really mate, all your concerned about is the money & the status & not that were all about to fucking die. Its hard to hate him but in this film you really do, thats how good an actor he is.

Now i wouldnt put it past my government (not that we have one that works at the moment) to hide this from us or any government at all. But this really does show the extreme, & Streep & Hill are amazing at it. I know so much of this comes from the Trump administration & watching that, but they are all so concerned with there poll rating & there own little bubble that they dont give a shit about the rest of the human race. Which is proven at the end when they all get in their special ship & leave the rest of us to die. Like DiCaprio i was like of course youve got a special contingency plan & are abandoning ship, but then the incompetence is proven by leaving Hill behind, bless him. He might have been a twat, but he didnt deserve that, i really felt for him in that moment.

We would have a concert to say look up at the comet we would to prove a point & there would be rival look up & dont look up campaigns its crazy. Although when they both see the comet as there worlds & lives have fallen apart & they just both stop their lives to reconcile, there was something very moving & cathartic about that & very human. That in amongst all the chaos going on & various motives, at the end of the day there is something heading for us which will kill us all & to just stop in that moment. I really like that. Its one of my favourite scenes from the last year. Makes you really think.

So Chris Evans Steels the show twice in a year. Free Guy & now in this as Devin Pieters promoting his film that comes out on the day the comet hits us, getting self promotion from it. Yea that would so happen too. There would be something like that. Its crazy & everything he says is so crap but its an epic 90seconds of film. Good on you Chris for doing it.

One of the things Adam McKay does in all his serious films, is explain hard stuff really simply, be it Margot in a bath, Jenga, a Guantanamo bay dinner menu or the end of the world to the president. He takes very technical hard stuff which is just exposition & he makes you understand it straight away. Its a proper skill & i love it.

Every end of the world disaster needs a hero & hes ours. They got a point you know & then not using him & turning it around & then him at the end shooting his gun at the sky going you will never take me alive. Brilliant & mate they wont take you alive, its gonna destroy earth.

When Cate Blanchett talks about all her achievement in bed, thats brilliant i love that. She so full of power & oozes confidence at that point, its brilliant. But so are the memes that have come out of that (mainly the Seb Vettle one tho). I also so relate to her when the world is ending & she is sitting there still in the bar when everyone else is freaking out with Tyler Perry going id just rather drink wine & chat shit about people. Yea if i cant be with my family when the world ends, id like that to be the way i go. Here & Perry on that news desk are brilliant. They get the anchor roles just right & you forget while they are doing there show that this isnt real. Its only when we come away from that situation that you remember oh yea this is a film.

I love how in the real world it would be the meme & the celeb gossip which would be more important trending that the world coming to an end in 6 months time. Its true its very true. Think about whats happened in the last 6months right here & now. I mean it is a distraction from how crap the world is but not to the extent that we ignore it. But you know back in February there was a real potential chance the world was going to end in like the next 3 weeks & now im sitting here typing this up in august & i have to go to page 2 on the BBC to see whats happening in the war. Thats what the media & social media does. It really does. We are apart of the problem & so potential is my blog… uhohhhhhh

Timothee Chalamet being excited over potatoes is brilliant & again something i can relate to quite a bit. I mean i dont know what fingerling potatoes are, if someone could let me know answers on a postcard please. But you know its the little things in life that get you through isnt it. you got to laugh or you will cry.

I like the mix of the president being told the info, then her coming up with the plan & then the plan being announced to the world to save it all being merged into one. I really likes that. Brilliant editing & how its all done so clever.

The worlds about to end… what did you say… its a boss level on a video game… oh okay & continue with your day…

Her parents not wanting to hear any politics or stuff to do with the end of the world as they might get a job from the comet is really interesting & that would be the situation people would be in. I really did feel for her. Even at the end of the world they were stubborn about that, not there there daughter had tried to warn the world or be proud of that. nah no politics you cant come back home… bastards.

I love the little clips of real life the world as it currently is throughout the film showing how precious life is & what the worlds mean to us. Its only done about 3 times in the film & for a total of 20secs each time, but it really does make you appreciate the little things in the world, it really does. Its lovely & thats why the world works & peoples work too. Its those small moments that keep you going through it all that we just take for granted.

When that second rocket blows up, my heart did skip a beat, you knew full well the drill mission wasnt going to work & you full on knew we were doomed even before the mission started. & then for it to go so wrong its comical. But yea up until that point on my first watch i was like you know what this will be generic & something will save the day but no it didnt.

The first credit scene, where they find the new host planet & then they are all attacked & basically die within mins of landing, serves them the fuck right, for abandoning the rest of us. They got there just deserts for ruining humanity & earth. I laughed a lot at that. & then the second one where Hill is the last man alive on earth as he was in that bunker as shit went down trying to Instagram, yeh that would happen too. Bloody brilliant.

The return home after shopping to go & have dinner with friends & family is so beautiful & is exactly what i would want in that situation if i can be with my family when that day comes (if not the wine will do). But just the accepting him back in after he broke her heart & ruined the family, at the end of the day they are all friends & family & just wanted that little time to be together to make it all worth while & try & make it as normal a dinner as possible. He also didnt die alone which was predicted earlier. He got his perfect death with those he cared for. I was so happy when he didnt take that seat on the ship. & its also just how everyones trying to stay as calm as they can & eat & drink & chat as the world falls apart around them. Its beautiful & very moving & i think that is my favourite scene in the film. Its not about the world ending its about your own little world youve made along the way before that day does come.

We did have it all didnt we…. yea thats the meaning of life right there.

Now as a reviewer, i can see why some people cant stand this film, & go the hell is this why is this so important. McKay is very divisive & you wither go with it or you dont. I mean it is stacked with names & a lots to grasp hold of, but if you get it like i do, its something you want to rewatch again & again & enjoy, even tho the world is ending in it & its not a happy ever after.

Also that is the point, every second we are here & we breath our life is getting nearer to the end & so is the earth, be it via a comet, climate change, war, whatever it is. Its edging closer & its scary & we cant take it for granted that its always going to be here. I mean weve just survived a fucking pandemic for fuck sake. The end is nearing & as much as i try to to the best for the planet, i could do more. I could walk to work a bit more & eat a few more veg & knock 30s of my shower & when i do drive drive electric. & i know if we all try & do that it makes the world a better place, but all the while the gov are telling us to do that, what are they actually doing to save the world for our grate grandchildren’s great grand kids, you know. Sorry didnt mean to get so deep & political &save the world there but i did & we do need to do something about it.

So Dont Look UP you fall into the i love it or i hate it camp, which i think is kind of the point after all of that. I do recommend you all watch it even if you do fall into the no not for me what a waste of 2h20min of my life, but then youve at least given it ago & thats all the film wants you to do. But if your like me & fall into the yes that was fucking brilliant category, welcome to the club.

Its wonderful, its funny, its thought provoking, its so well acted & its a please to watch. Seriously people will talk about this film for many years to come & will become so important in the future, if we have one that is.
