Spoilers
I fancy an action film form the past which is weird, but that i know isnt as serious as it makes itself out to be. Im also going to watch all of marvel in order once we get to 2022, so im feeling a little bit of uncle Casey & the madness & sexism that is in Under Siege 2. I havnet thought about this film in years but i am right now. Weird, very weird.
This film is such a product of 1995. It really really is. & its only now watching it as an adult that im like oh god really. Its so cringe. I mean i have a nostalgia vibe for it as it was from my childhood, but if it wasnt for that & i was watching this like i watched newer early 90s films this way ifd have been like how did they get away with this.
Seagal is at least actually in this one more than he is in the first, which i guess is good. But how many hand moves does he actually have to do before he hits someone in this. Its all moving everywhere. Its like he saw he had to do distractions & then went for it entirely. Crazy, just crazy. Its not good viewing in that respect. & im not sure how many people he actually kills. Altho the line nobody beats me in the Kitchen is bloody good. I always like that.
The kitchen fight scene is the best. I know its literally the finale before the crash but it is the best bit of the film. Theres stuff everywhere after the initial first kitchen take out where he hid in the freezer but its also the fact the guy he fights to save his niece gets all beaten up & bloody & Seagal is absolutely fine & not got a cut on him. The line dude you ruined my coat… really?
We also need to appreciate that its like a 15 year old Katherine Heigl as his Niece. Shes properly needy but she plays it well being the awkward teenager whos lost her parents & doesnt want to be on a train with her uncle at all. & i think for the entire film they say all of 20 words to each other & dont actually really spend any time with each other until shes about to drop the granade at the end of act 3. She knows how to work people tho in the film, which is cool. But all the tropes are there knowing shes gonna get taken & used as bate.
Travis Dane is a good character, but could have been played better & if he was written into a film a bit classier & about 7 years later wed have all gone yea that was a good performance. Also all of his Hench men in the film, make him look like hes just there because of his science & It back ground. I mean hiding the satellite & being on a train so no one can track him is an epic idea. I mean in the 90s they loved tech guys sending codes from train (Bond im looking at you). He also meets a rather gruesome if not badly cgid death at the end of the film.
There is one Hench man who i feel a bit sorry for hes the one that almost takes out his mate from the train whos helping him. Hes the only one who seems like hes got any real idea & he dies at the very start of act 3.
Faxing your restaurant that you have been on a train & its been taken hostage & that they need to contact the us government is so 90s & also how did everyone get though to the us government on a whim in the 90s. Imagine trying to do that now. Im sure by even typing this the FBI CIA MI6 are reading this… Hi guys you good, do you want to join my film clan? but every film did do this. & they all just eventually believe it.
Faking your death to get satellite control is a bit dramatic & why that couple thought it was to spy on there relationship, how self indulgent were they. Also i love how he saves her eye straight away & shes just like ahhh i can cope without one of those eyes. Brilliant. She definitely wore the trousers in that relationship for sure. & then he killed them both. I mean fair enough, but who were they gonna blab too if they were on a train he was gonna blow up anyhow.
Are the Rocky mountains really like that? as someone whos not been, i want to know. I know its been 27 years since this film came out but i think thats a fair question. If an american bestie could let me know, id like to know.
Also in the 90s hollywood loved having a secret gov project that no one knew about which all the money was spent on the save them all. I mean i wouldnt put it past them now (other than our UK gov is so ruined they wouldnt even know where to start {fyi i had that written on here from March not knowing how mucked up wed be now}). But it would so be something they would do.
Telling that kid just to pick a random satellite is a bit much, the pressure on him.
When he runs through that train as it explodes & crashes is just sooooooooooo out there its madness. Its proper oh god this is cringe but amazing.
Some of the sexiest joke are so bad, they really are. Im not going to repeat them other than the one where he says tits to die for… the guy did die by the way.
Its not very well written, its got so many clichés in it. & even the exposition as to why, & the important tech stuff is poorly done. I mean im not expecting a perfect dump of all that stuff but some of it is just so badly done. Its awkward to watch.
& it has to end with him in uniform doesnt it, typical.
If i hadnt seen this as a kid, id be sitting her going this is crap but because i saw it years ago & have fond memories of it from then, i give it more of the benefit of the doubt than i really should. Nostalgia more that a good film.
