I remembered this fondly as a child & loved it as she was a princess but wasn’t & was real ish. So now it’s on sky cinema I thought let’s give it a go. Let’s see if it last the 20 years of time difference there has been. If it still stands up to the mantra today…
Synopsis is Anastasia & her family have a curse put on them by Rasputin who kinda dies ish. In her escape through a trap door & running to a train she falls hits her head & wakes up with no memory. Now aged 18 she’s picked up a stay dog & wants to go to Paris which is her only clue to her family. She meets 2 guys who are auditioning for Anastasia lookalikes to take to Paris but she fits there bill. The three of them plus the dog head off to Paris teaching her all the things she needs on the way, while trying not to hate & then not fall in love with each other, & avoid Rasputin curses. They get to Paris & Dmitri realises she is actually the princess as he was the boy who opened the trap door which she answers. Upon presenting her to her grandma he is exposed for being a fraud & she runs off. Eventually Dmitri reunites Anastasia & grandma which triggers her memory & she remembers everything. Dmitri refuses the reward because it’s morally wrong. Anastasia only finds this out at a grand ball & becomes conflicted when Rasputin strikes & tries to blow her up in a bridge in Paris, while Dmitri & the dog fight him. Anastasia eventually destroys the curse & kills Rasputin. Anastasia decides not to become the princess of Russia but return back with Dmitri & the two finally kiss on a boat down the Seine.
God that was a long synopsis sounds like something from Wikipedia apologise for that but you now get the idea if you’ve not seen this.
The animation in this film is really poor & when I say that I mean like there’s one point where Anastasia has one face structure & then in the next scene it’s completely different & you don’t actually really recognise her. There is no continuity in the drawings at all even the back grounds are poor, except the palace art that’s cool.
There was a drag act in this when I was younger?! Wtf it’s a kids film that’s a little bit much. I know it’s the 90s but still it was bad.
Why did that glass thing only wake up when Anastasia was near it why hadn’t it been glowing for the last 10 years then Rasputin could have gone to that orphanage set it on fire & it would have all been sorted out & curse over. I know that’s then a short film but you know. Why didn’t it recognise with all its power that she was still around somewhere.
Limbo is quite cool. Not as cool as inception limbo(I’ve just mentioned inception during a review of Anastasia oh my god forgive me sir Nolan) but yea it was nice & grim. The physics are a bit squiffy too.
They just happened to get tickets to the moulin rouge & Russian ballet & could go to both on the same night & go shopping? Yea nah that didn’t happen. Also their boxes weren’t all sold out too.
Dmitri is not a very good hero or meet cute or with a good personality at all until he realises it’s her at all. They also don’t care about each other at all until they dance. If that’s all it take to make someone fall in love then I’m calling bullshit on this again no way Pepe.
Why doesn’t he actually just tell people he is the boy in the door with the music box? Also wouldn’t he have died in the escape as well as an assistant?
Maybe this is a moral to not go back & look at your childhood films so fondly. This has so many plot holes & isn’t very well animated & the songs aren’t that catchy & there aren’t enough of them.
Sorry Anastasia you’ve lost a fan here. Shame really I love it when I was little.
