Spoilers
I remember leaving the cinema & going wow & looking at the other faces leaving looking disappointed. How could i have got & enjoyed the film when they all didnt. So ive got 90mins free, lets re-watch it & see if i did get it.
Okay yes there are some bits where i now sit there like okay yea thats odd we just accept that, but obviously i do need to read the book to get the bits people were disappointed in, because i still enjoyed it again.
There is one bit near the end of the film where Matthew McConaughey goes alright. I mean its not alright alight alright, but still its like yep tick that off your bingo list.
Hearing Idris calling Earth Keystone Earth & not midguard like in the MCU is also something its hard to get used too.
As much as we know the three main characters extremely world by the end of the film, we meet so many there along the way, that we are convinced we need to care for or understand them & their motives as to why, but then they all die or we never revisit them again. So when they do die you dont feel sad or angry as you didnt know them well enough to make a connection to them. Even when he returns home thats not gut wrenching.
None of the other kids on the earth who had the shine or those gifts had the nightmares then just Jake. I mean thats very strange. I mean i get that it helps later on but no one else at all. ITs very odd. There must have been other people who had it.
I understand wanting to talk & write down your dreams (im queen of over analysing my dreams {where is my american husband} i really do) but keeping all those drawings as well & having everyone else look at them so much is mad. Also they do just dismiss it his friends & family & then go to the other extreme to send him away.
I know the whole idea is everyone that walks with you dies by my hand is meant to be scary & everything but we only ever see Rolands dad die. Okay yes hes the last Gun Slinger, but still its very much a oh really. Maybe some flash backs even if in Jakes dream once hes made the connection could help with this then we would understand Rolands suffering so much. & then at the end he just says oh come be my gun slinger with me…. after 90mins of going no for the last 2 hes like yea come on kid lets go.
The gun slingers creed is a bit much isnt it. I mean yes it inspires people throughout the movie but its so long that by the time you always reach the last part your just liek i get this now come on. Also Roland goes from nope never kid to giving him a fucking gun.
He just got out of earth that easily that boss level villain at the door wasnt that good.
I love how the Man in Black does jut control everything with his god like power, adding hate & death & fear into everyone & controlling the guy in the shop. Also surly Roland knows his tricks by now & know hes just a hologram. Hes fought him enough surly.
I understand the villages sacrifice, but you know we had only just met them again so why did i care that the man in black then took them all out later on. YEs it does add to the story but we needed to know more.
a hospital would just let him walk out. I mean yes they take the drugs with them but seriously….
The shoot out before we get to the final fight is good, bodies & people are just dropping everywhere & going crazy. Its good, its so so good. ITs one of those moments where you sit there & you watch it & go oh okay yeah this is bloody good. & then the one on one fight afterwards is pretty special too, especially getting the upper hand in the end.
The shines true power is never fully explained is it. I mean its cleaver, but as a McGuffin a bit more info on it other than it could take out the shower & people can be tracked using isnt, its a little vague. Like its never fully explained exactly why the tower holds all the monsters in.
Some of the cinematography especially thought the gates & some of the world & lands are beautiful especially the theme park part, nice dark & mystic. Its very cool & fits hte film so well.
Elba & McConaughey do hold the whole thing together & you really do believe their characters. Tom is good but some of the stuff he had to say or react to was a little beneath him at times. He felt like a bad McGuffin too at times, but that wasnt his fault, its the stories.
I still enjoy this film despite its issues. Its pretty well put together & its clever. I just wish it ironed out some issues & made a few other characters more investable so then we cared about their fates. Maybe an extra 15 mins of the film would have really helped.
Basically i think ive got to read the book to see if this is true & good enough.
